With King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s fourth album of 2017, the band conquers the various time signatures and polyrhythms of progressive rock, on the colourful and complex, Polygondwanaland.

The nearly 11 minute-long Crumbling Castle is one of the band’s most impressive openers, using a mix of time signatures, such as 7/8, 4/4 and 5/4. Leah Senior returns for spoken-word vocals on Castle in the Air, after having been featured on Murder of the Universe. Deserted Dunes Welcome Weary Feet is one of the most chaotic and kinetic tracks on an already eccentric album. Loyalty opens with a Tron-like synth passage. The ominous Searching… evokes the eastern-influences that permeate much of TOOL’s material.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s Polygondwanaland is the sound of the perpetually-experimental Aussie rockers mastering yet another genre — add this to the band’s ever-expanding list of best albums yet.
