The Musiquarium’s SZNZ: Spring Review Score: 5.5 out of 10

Released on the spring equinox, Weezer’s first instalment of their seasonal EPs focuses on spring and the optimistic sounds that come with the blossoming of the flowers, which is readily-apparent on the overly saccharine and twee Opening Night, where a 50+ year old Rivers Cuomo interpolates Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, as he sings “Shakespeare makes me happy, Hamlet makes me happy” alongside flutes — and yes, it’s about as gay and lacking in self-awareness as you would imagine it to be. The Garden of Eden is a similarly cheesy pop song, but is slightly more palatable. The rest of the tracks are similarly upbeat, with none really being clear highlights, though Angels on Vacation may come closest.

SZNZ: Spring isn’t quite as bad as Raditude, Pacific Daydream or Weezer (Black Album), but that’s an incredibly low bar. SZNZ: Spring is a poor start to Weezer’s SZNZ series and makes me dread the other seasons.
